IDB Chief Economist José Juan Ruiz Gómez visits SUFE

The Chief Economist at Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mr. José Juan Ruiz Gómez, accompanied by Mr. Julio Cesar Angel-Mejia, Deputy Chief Representative, Office in Asia and Mr. Jianjun Xu, Operations Senior Specialist, Office of Outreach and Partnerships, paid a visit to Shanghai University of Finance and Economics on July 28, 2016. Dean Jiandong Ju, School of International Business Administration, met the delegation. Assistant Dean Heng Ju, Professor Xiang Gao and Professor Lixin Tang joined the meeting.

Both IDB and SUFE delegates actively explored the potential areas for research collaborations and education collaborations after sharing each research and view.

Established in 1959, IDB is the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), as well as for regional integration. It is the leading source of infrastructure financing and plays a leading role in backing private sector projects that contribute decisively to sustainable growth and social inclusion in LAC. IDB has 48 member countries, including 26 LAC borrowing members, who have a majority ownership of the IDB, as well as 22 non-borrowing member countries. China joined the bank in 2009.

IDB has a strong favor for research. It believes that the Bank is not only the source for financing, but also the hub to disseminate development knowledge through their strong research team composing mainly of PhD economists.

In the first part of the meeting, both SUFE and IDB introduced their institutional background and research capabilities. Professor Heng Ju also presented SUFE’s the innovative and inter-disciplinary Master program in International Organizations. In the second part, a mini-workshop on research, Mr. Ruiz spoke about “Latin America Meets China: IDB Mission to Peking and Shanghai”, sharing the bank’s view toward macro-issues among developing countries. Three prominent research professors in international economics in SUFE, Xiang Gao, Lixin Tang and Jiandong Ju, presented their latest research to the visitors. Gao’s topic is “Domestic Creditor Rights and External Private Debt”; Tang’s topic regards the international trade and inequality across regional development; and Ju’s “Capital market openness and financial crisis prevention in China”.

IDB’s trip was invited by the People’s Bank of China, China’s central bank, to explore the views toward development issues and the possible areas for joint research with Chinese institutions.
